Purpose: The Process Engineer owns the manufacturing process(s) assigned as well as the planning and execution of capital and cost improvement projects in coordination with site resources.  Responsible for timely, professional completion of projects that meet objectives and come in at or under budget.  The Process Engineer develops and supports manufacturing processes within the facility that reduce scrap levels, increase yield, and improve productivity.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Optimize formulations as needed, utilizing lab equipment initially and proceeding to production scale line trials.
  • Analyze and evaluate department manufacturing processes, systems, equipment, and materials in terms of their associated cost, safety, quality, and output factors.
  • Recommend manufacturing changes.
  • Coordinate the design and development of new manufacturing processes, systems, equipment, and materials to more effectively contribute to short and long term economic objectives.
  • Write and distribute operating work instructions to all affected personnel on the shop floor.
  • Train operators on associated product and process changes.
  • Assist engineering, manufacturing, and maintenance personnel in problem solving activities related to assigned area for product support.
  • Implement lean manufacturing principles.
  • Develop strategies for process improvement, and evaluate impact of such changes.
  • Actively participate in and/or drive root cause analysis and process improvement efforts.
  • Prepare evaluations of and justifications for the procurement of new machines and work equipment.
  • Work directly with machine operators to identify needs and develop solutions.
  • Work with maintenance personnel on equipment modifications and preventative/predictive maintenance to ensure reliability.
  • Promote worker safety by actively assessing activities on a constant basis to ensure no unsafe actions or results will occur.
  • Stress safe working practices to associates.
  • Assist in audits of employee behaviors to ensure compliance with safety rules and guidelines.
  • Ensure housekeeping in the immediate and surrounding work area is maintained or improved to the highest level possible.
  • Participate in customer complaint system with the goals of prevention of future occurrences and complaint avoidance.
  • Manages projects start to finish and ensures efficient use of labor, capital, and other resources.
  • Determines project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements.
  • Determines project schedule by reviewing scope of project, calculating time requirements and sequencing project activities.
  • Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget.
  • Prepares interim and completion project reports.
  • Partners with EHS for site regulatory compliance.
  • Provides and maintains drawings and other needed documentation and assists with identification of spare parts.
  • Trains manufacturing resources to ensure successful startup and operation of new equipment.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Four year degree in chemical, industrial, plastics, mechanical engineering or similar degree.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in plastic processes required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office necessary. Experience with AutoCAD and SAP a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience preferred
